Dr Stephen Thompson (MBBS, FRANZCR, PhD) is a Senior Staff Specialist in Radiation Oncology at the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre at Prince of Wales Hospital, as well as Conjoint Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine at UNSW. He trained at Westmead Hospital and subsequently undertook Fellowship and his PhD at Liverpool Hospital. Soft tissue sarcomas are one of his areas of sub-specialty expertise, with a particular focus on the use of IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy), VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy) and IGRT (Image Guided Radiotherapy) for these malignancies, aiming to deliver safe and accurate radiotherapy. He is the Chair of the Prince of Wales Soft Tissue Sarcoma Multi-Disciplinary Team. The unit has implemented the innovative modified Eilber protocol for neoadjuvant radiotherapy, enabling lower doses of radiation to be used with equal effectiveness.
Dr Thompson is heavily involved in cancer clinical research as well as training of the next generation of radiation oncologists. He is on numerous state and national Scientific Advisory Committees, including for RANZCR (Royal Australia New Zealand College of Radiology) and NSW Cancer Institute, as well as the ANZSA (Australia and New Zealand Sarcoma Association) Scientific Advisory Committee, Sarcoma Guidelines Working Party and Database Working Group.
